AI on the buy side, in numbers

Professional investors now hand much of their first reading to AI: your earnings calls, your filings, the news about you. Here is how far it has gone.

AIMA, about 150 fund managers in each survey. The 2023 figure for the first line measured staff access to generative AI tools.3 Among asset managers, 91% of 131 surveyed plan to increase their use of AI in the next 12 months.4

Their in-house AI runs on the same few models

In-house usually means the firm's own platform, data and controls, built on a model licensed from Anthropic, OpenAI or Google. Only 28% of 131 managers surveyed by Mercer have developed AI models of their own.4 Among the 35 largest asset managers, 77% have rolled out enterprise versions of tools such as Claude and ChatGPT.5

So the model behind a fund's walls is often one you can query yourself. What differs is what it is given to read. The 5mn AI snapshot asks these models what they say about your company from public sources.

What the buy side's AI is given to read

Managers most want to feed their AI broker research (77%) and earnings transcripts (57%). The main obstacle, for 69%, is licensing.5 Research that is published openly or distributed on research platforms reaches these systems. Research that does not exist cannot.
